Follow in Polish Footsteps
Stamford is indelibly linked to the story of the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade, and this route includes Rock House on Casterton Road, formerly the Brigade Headquarters.
Route
See Stamford School, used by members of the Brigade’s Parachute Field Ambulance (Medical Company), and the memorials to its collie sheepdog mascot, ‘Smokey’, and to the Brigade itself.
Pause at Tinwell to reflect on the C-47 training flight accident that killed 26 Polish paratroopers and eight American airmen on 8 July 1944. There is a memorial to them in Tinwell Church.
Then on to Easton-on-the-Hill (1st Polish Parachute Battalion and Signals Company) and the two airfields from where the Polish paratroopers flew to the Netherlands on Operation MARKET GARDEN: Saltby (314th Troop Carrier Group USAAF) and Spanhoe (315th Troop Carrier Group, USAAF). Discover Blatherwycke (Anti-Tank Battery and elements of the Parachute Field Ambulance) and Wansford (2nd Polish Parachute Battalion and Engineer Company).
Café stops in Oakham, at the Birch Tree Café in Easton-on-the-Hill, Wymondham Windmill, between Cottesmore and Exton (Hambleton Bakery, Barnsdale Gardens), and Bulwick Village Stores.
