MARKET GARDEN Trail - Route Two

A Route Too Far?
These rides mark South Kesteven's role in the Airborne landings in the Netherlands during Operation MARKET GARDEN in September 1944. South Kesteven was the home to units of the British 1st Airborne Division and the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade. They would attempt to secure bridges over the Neder Rijn river at Arnhem for units of the advancing British Second Army.
Route Two
Many Airborne troops were stationed between south Lincolnshire and Leicestershire, and this route links sites occupied by the British 4th Parachute Brigade, which was destroyed at Arnhem.
This route starts in Melton Mowbray, the 'Rural Capital of Food'. The town housed the British the 11th Parachute Battalion in what is now Remount Barracks, the home of the Defence Animal Training Regiment, and the 156th Parachute Battalion within the town itself.
The route takes in Somerby, where the Headquarters of the 10th Parachute Battalion was located, and Borough-on-the-Hill, which hosted two of the Companies in the Battalion. The 'Friends of the Tenth' (https://friendsofthetenth.co.uk/) have created a trail of sites associated with the Battalion.
The route then passes through Knossington, where the 4th Parachute Brigade Headquarters was billeted, and on to Barleythorpe, home of the 133rd Parachute Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. The route continues to Glaston, home of the 4th Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers.
After this, the route loops back to Melton Mowbray, via the two airfields used by the Brigade's paratroopers on 18 September 1944: Spanhoe (315th Troop Carrier Group, USAAF) and Saltby (314th Troop Carrier Group USAAF).
Find multiple café stops in Oakham, at Bulwick Village Stores and Wymondham Windmill.
