Rock House was built in 1842 for Richard Newcombe, the proprietor of the Stamford Mercury newspaper. It is a two-storey mansion in stone with a Welsh slate roof.

During World War II, Rock House was requisitioned for military use.  When the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade arrived in the area from Scotland in July 1944, Rock House became its Headquarters and was used by its commander, Major General Stanislaw Sosabowski, and his Brigade staff.

The Headquarters was involved in planning the Brigade's involvement in Airborne operations alongside the British 1st Airborne Division, including Operation MARKET GARDEN in September 1944.

The Brigade was sent to Germany on occupation duties in May 1945 and remained there until it was disbanded in June 1947.
