D-Day - Southern Route Trail

D-Day: Launchpad for the Liberation of Europe
These routes mark South Kesteven's role in the liberation of western Europe. The District contained US Troop Carrier airfields and the Headquarters of the US IX Troop Carrier Command.
Southern Route
This route visits two airfields used to fly the US 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division, as well as the airfield used to fly the Pathfinders of both the US 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions to Normandy on the night of the 5/6 June 1944.
It passes the former airfields at Harlaxton, Saltby (home of 314th Troop Carrier Group) and North Witham (where the first troop-carrier aircraft took off for US Airborne assault on Normandy), as well as passing close to the former airfield at Folkingham (home of the 313th Troop Carrier Group).
Stop at cafés in Corby Glen - either Lilly’s Lavender Hut or Hattie’s, near the Market Place.
